Reading Notes: Krishna Folktales, Part A

Krishna Comes - Intro
Kamsa hated Krishna even before he was born. Krishna grew enemies who tried to keep him from being born. But when the enemies failed, they tried to keep him from growing up. But when this failed too, Krishna made allies with kind people and was loved by many. Eventually, he slays his ultimate enemy who is also his uncle, Kamsa.

Episode 1 - Kamsa
Kunti gave birth to Indra's son, Arjuna. Another birth took place far away... this birthed son would guide the Pandavas into war and bring about victory.. This birth was that of the one and only, Krishna. Kansa is a cruel ruler of Mathura. The gods above demanded that the eighth son of Devaki would slay Kansa. Kansa loved his cousin, Devaki, and decided not to kill her but instead throw her and her husband in jail until he found their son and killed him. He thought killing the eighth child would rid of his doom. Out of pure evilness, Kamsa killed all of Devaki's children, six in total. Vishnu came to Earth as an eighth incarnation as Krishna. Kamsa assumed this child was his last threat to death.

Episode 2 - Vasudev Meets Yamuna
Devaki gave birth to a son and soon, Kansa heard of this birth and his impending death. But when the entire Mathura fell asleep, Vasudev took his son into the night. A voice inside advised him to surrender to the Yamuna river. There was a serpent who protected Vasudev from rain as he crossed the river, which was only waist deep. He reached the town of Yashoda, Nanda's wife, who had given birth to a girl. Vasudev placed Krishna next to Yashoda and took the baby girl. He was devastated to abandon his son but knew this was the best choice.

Episode 3 - Durga Speaks to Kamsa
Kansa was awoken by a nightmare. Devaki gave birth to her eighth. Kansa was happy to know that it was a baby girl she had given birth to. The girl was actually the many armed Durga. Kansa was fearful. Durga told him the truth: Krishna was born and Kansa wouldn't have to go looking for him because he would find him.

Episode 4 - Putana 
Yashoda grew to love her son immensely. And she wasn't alone. Holy men, merchants, and travelers from everywhere loved Krishna. Meanwhile, Kamsa grew mad
Putana became a close part of Yashoda's family. But she changed form and became a demon. She wanted to kill Krishna, as directed by Kansa, but while she tried to during the night, her streagth and even the hatred in her heart was taken back by Krishna. Krishna defeated the demon, but was himself unharmed.

Episode 5 - Maakan Chor
Cart rolled down the hill carrying Krishna and.
Krishna became notorious became the naughty child of Gokul. He and his friends troubled Gopis. Burst vessels containing butter and curd. Maakhan-chor he became. Those he stole from became angry. When people told Yashoda, she denied this and resumed to punish Krishna.

Episode 6 - Krishna's Mouth
Yashoda heard Krishna was eating mud. He opened his mouth, and Yashoda saw the universe within Krishna. She saw and felt eternity within Krishna. This was the first time that she was the mother of the Brahmand himself.

Episode 7 - Dreams and Music 
Haze filled minds of Gokul that told everyone to move away. They settled in Vindrivan. Krishna explored the forest here. They made this forest home. Krishna became interested in playing the flute. It didn't take him long to become the flute prodigy. Krishna found everyone was poisioned by the water. Kalia the serpent poisoned them. It looked like Shiva's taandav. The water of the lake was rid of the poison. It was clear to the people of Vindrivan that they were in the presence of an avatar.

Episode 8 - Kamsa's Terrors
Krishna grew into a yound man. Krishna stole the clothes of a bunch of young women bathing in the river. She wondered why the villagers. Whirlwind hit the town. Krishna overpowered the tornado by choking the demon. Krishna survived. Kamsa ran out of monsters. He would not be able to challenge the king quite yet.

Episode 9 - The Govardhan Hill
Krishna advised people to pray for this hill for rain, instead of Indra. Everyone ran to Krishna to seek protection from the dooming rains. He listed the hill and the hill became an umbrella for these people.

Episode 10 - Radha's Love 
Krishna played the flute, which mesmerized the Gopis. They would dance around him. He had his name on Radha,. They grew up together and fell in love. Gopis asked Radha to drink scolding hot milk as a test to proving his love for Krishna. She immediately agreed and afterwards, it was on Krishna's tongue that was covered in blisters and Radha bore none. Krishna fell ill and Radha would do anything to save his life so she washed her feet and let him drink from his mouth.
